The position
This is a senior Scripted role in the Legal & Business Affairs team. You will work with Viaplay’s Commercial Affairs, Finance and Editorial teams plus external producers, distributors and financiers to negotiate and contract our scripted Viaplay Originals. The role will focus on supporting Viaplay, our premium SVOD service, but will cover our free/pay television and VOD services plus programme distribution as required.
The journey ahead
Viaplay started in Scandinavia and is now available in 12 countries including the US. We plan to be in 21 markets by the end of 2023. This role will be pivotal in the continued expansion of Viaplay into these new markets and supporting the business in its existing markets.
What we are looking for
We are looking for a qualified lawyer with extensive experience of scripted commissioning/co-production.
As a Senior Counsel, Legal & Business Affairs your responsibilities will include:
- Help build and develop effective relationships with producers, financiers, distributors and key business stakeholders
- Act as Business Partner to business stakeholders, advising on legal risk management – i.e. how to understand, qualify & quantify legal risks - and develop effective risk mitigation strategies together with the business
- Draft and negotiate scripted contracts and support business in implementing and managing such contracts through contract management and other processes
- Coordinate with Content Legal team and Commercial Legal team to align content rights (assets, license rights and limitations, IP protection etc), sublicensing/sales and pipeline opportunities (customer needs and requirements) to ensure back-to-back mitigation of risk and maximizing opportunities
- Assist with other Content agreements and other legal matters related to content as necessary
- Continuously identify ways to improve and develop working practices
- Coordinate with others in the Legal Team around contract guidelines and directives of general relevance, such as default clauses and risk tolerance levels, and on contract management efforts benefiting the whole Viaplay group
- Build and develop business self-service structures through contract templates, checklists etc to enable business to manage basic or standardized legal matters
- Monitor new and upcoming local regulations, as well as EU legislation together with Head of European Public Affairs, with relevance to scripted production and acquisition and proactively guide key business stakeholders on preparing for and addressing relevant implications for the business
- Build capacity in business and with key business stakeholders to understand and comply with regulatory requirements in everyday business (“embedded compliance”), work with Compliance function to effect the same, (co)host trainings etc.
