Viaplay Studios is Viaplay Group’s in-house production arm, which comprises of production companies in the Nordic region and CEE. In the Nordics, Viaplay Studios employs some of the most creative and talented drama producers and creators, developing scripted content specifically tailored to the Viaplay streaming service. In CEE, Viaplay Studios runs its subsidiary Paprika Studios, offering production service capabilities to producers and entertainment providers locally and around the world.
Viaplay Studios is behind critically acclaimed series and films such as ‘Hilma’, ‘The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared’, 'Quick' ('The Perfect Patient), 'Hassel', 'Thicker Than Water', 'Max Anger' and 'The Box'.
Right now, we’re searching for a temporary Legal Counsel in our Stockholm office for a period from the 1st of June 2023 till the 31st of March 2024 – are you ready to hit play on an exciting career change?
The role
You will be responsible for providing legal support for scripted productions within Viaplay Studios in the Nordics, reporting to the Head of Legal at Viaplay Studios. You will also be working closely with the rest of the legal team within Viaplay Group where relevant, such as on intersecting issues, processes and practice areas.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Draft and negotiate scripted content contracts, such as rights acquisitions agreements, development agreements, program production/co-production agreements, distribution agreements and other agreements related to scripted production. Support producers with agreements for directors, scriptwriters, actors, composers and other key staff.
- Coordinate with the CEOs of Viaplay Studios Sweden and Viaplay Studios Norway, Head of Production, Finance and other key scripted stakeholders to align acquired content rights with sublicensing/sales to ensure back-to-back mitigation of risks and maximizing opportunities
- Confirm chain of title and handle clearance matters, guild/union issues, and promotion and publicity issues
- Continuously identify ways to improve and develop working practices within the legal team and in business interfaces, including identify ways to make workflows and processes more efficient
- Build and develop business self-service structures through contract templates, checklists, etc, to enable business to manage basic or standardized legal matters
- Working closely with the business, advising on legal risk management and developing effective risk mitigation strategies together with the business
- Assist with other legal matters related to Viaplay Studios as necessary
What we’re looking for
We understand you may feel confident ticking certain boxes more than others and that’s why we always keep an open mind in our recruitment process. But, in order to thrive in this role, we do believe you’ll have at least some experience in the following:
- Swedish Master of Law Degree (Sw. jur kand)
- Experience (between 4-8 years) negotiating and drafting commercial agreements and advising on IP matters as an in-house counsel and/or at a reputable business law firm
- It’s considered an extra merit if the candidate has experience from the media/entertainment industry and is familiar with the business and established terminology
- Fluent in Swedish and English
- Business and solution oriented and great relationship builder, able to create trust for the legal team in the business, and to deliver pragmatic and actionable legal advice to people at all levels
