Principal Streaming Engineer
At Viaplay Group, we entertain millions of people every day through our streaming services, radio networks, and TV channels. We believe in the power of content not just as a way of telling stories and touching lives, but also expanding worlds.
We’re looking for the best people to join us on our journey. Right now, we’re searching for a Principal Streaming Engineer in our Stockholm office – are you ready to hit play on an exciting career change?
The Role
As a Principal Streaming Engineer at Viaplay, you are the technical authority in media streaming. You provide architectural direction, guide technology choices, and set best practices that enable product teams to succeed. While deeply hands-on, your impact extends beyond code: you mentor engineers, influence multiple teams, and act as a trusted partner to our leaders to ensure solutions are not only technically sound but also aligned with strategic business goals.
Your impact
World-class user experience - You design and guide the technical foundations that deliver the streaming experience our users love to use; fast start-up, resilient quality, minimal buffering, low latency and more.
Scalable and sustainable growth - You create architectures that allow the platform to scale without sacrificing performance, reliability, or cost efficiency.
Cost optimization – You drive engineering changes that balance long-term maintainability with business impact, ensuring the product strategy is technically achievable and cost-effective.
Innovation leadership - You drive the exploration and adoption of emerging streaming technologies that strengthens our brand and user base.
Strengthened technology culture - You coach, guide, and empower teams across the organization, raising the level of streaming expertise and enabling Viaplay to move faster and more confidently toward its goals.
Strategic partnerships - You represent Viaplay in collaborations with CDN, cloud, and standards organizations, ensuring we influence and benefit from the evolving streaming ecosystem.
What we’re looking for
We are a cross-functional group of streaming and video engineers, backend developers, and product leaders, including a Product Manager and Engineering Manager, who work closely together to shape the future of streaming at Viaplay. Our different perspectives ensure that strategy, technology, and execution stay aligned. Beyond building world-class streaming experiences, we value collaboration, learning, and having fun together - both at work and after hours.
We understand you may feel confident ticking certain boxes more than others and that’s why we always keep an open mind in our recruitment process. But, in order to thrive in this role, we do believe you’ll have at least some experience in the following:
- Deep experience (10+ years) in streaming technologies, media processing, network protocols, and distributed systems
- Solid understanding of video and audio coding (H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, AV1, AAC, Dolby etc.)
- Experience with DRM solutions (Widevine, FairPlay, PlayReady) and security architecture
- Strong expertise in cloud infrastructure , mainly AWS and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes
- Experience in CDN architecture and edge optimization
- Ability to define and drive technical vision and roadmaps in collaboration with management and product managers
- Experience of acting as a technical mentor and influencing across team boundaries.
- Very good communication skills and experience in presenting complex technology in an understandable way to different stakeholders.
- Hands-on development background - experience as a software engineer is not mandatory, but is considered a strong plus for understanding implementation realities and guiding teams effectively
- Visionary with a practical mindset and a drive for results
What we offer you
- We’ve got you covered! 30 days of paid vacation every year, an attractive pension and insurance scheme, and generous parental leave pay lift.
- Your wellbeing matters. We provide you with various wellbeing initiatives including wellness allowance.
- Flexibility that works. We follow a hybrid model with at least three days a week in the office, giving you the best mix of collaboration and focus time.
- A safe space to grow and up-skill. Our learning culture puts you in the driver’s seat of your own development.
- An innovative environment with Hack Days once a year. This week-long initiative allows you to think outside the box and deliver creative, technical solutions that (more often than not) go on to be implemented, either in our product or our ways of working.
- Entertainment is what we love, and entertainment is what we do. So, unlimited access to Viaplay seems only fair for you to get to know the product – including serier & viewing events, new release movie rentals, linear channels and more.
